It is to be noted that Goehot’s jailbreak for PlayStation 3 on version 3.55 won’t allow you to play backup games or pirated games. With this jailbreak method you can install custom packages on your PS 3.

Here is the short version of jailbreak method by Geohot:

This folder contains the PS3 downgrade for 4.87 OFW to 3.55 OFW. Plug the USB into the PS3 console (off), and then turn it on. Once the console has loaded, head to Settings – System Update - Update via Storage Media - Proceed This should take around 10 minutes to complete. Now the console should be 3.55 OFW.

The complete step by step jailbreak instructions are:

To Jailbreak PS3 on 3.55 only

1. Plug a USB stick into your computer
2. Create a folder in the root of the USB stick called PS3
3. Create a folder inside the PS3 folder called UPDATE
4. Download http://geohot.com/jailbreak.zip
5. Unzip Jailbreak.zip to PS3UPDAT.PUP
6. Move PS3UPDAT.PUP to the directory UPDATE that you just created on the USB stick
7. Plug the USB stick into your PS3
8. Navigate to Settings Tab
9. Choose System Update
10. Choose Update via Storage Media
11. It will say it found Version 3.55-jb
12. Choose OK
13. Accept Conditions and Install Update
14. After less than a minute, your PS3 will update, beep 4 times then shut down.
15. Power up your PS3 (You will have to do it on the console and not by the controller)
16. Your PS3 is now jailbroken!

After your PS3 is jailbroken, follow the steps mentioned below to install the custom packages:

1. Plug your USB stick into your computer
2. Drop http://geohot.com/test.pkg into the root of the USB stick
3. Plug your USB stick into your PS3
4. Navigate to the Game Tab
5. Choose Install Package Files
6. Select the test.pkg
7. After it installs you will find the test package from geohot installed below the Install Package Files folder
8. Wait for more packages to be created by the PS3 community

Before you are able to jailbreak your PS3, you must first understand what a PS3 Jailbreak 4.87 CFW does, in terms of legal and hardware.

  • Legal: The warranty will be voided as soon as you remove the original firmware and switch to custom firmware. But, luckily the ps3 jailbreak can e reversed, and we show that at the end of the tutorial below.

  • Hardware: Your PS3 console will be “unlocked”, it will be able to run homebrew applications. Usually only PS3 licensed software can be used on the console, but this opens it up to a whole wide range of possibilities, here are some; Run games without a disc, Play MKV files, Use game mods and of course, run homebrew apps (Tutorials on how to perform these features can be found on this website).
  1. USB stick with 256MB free.
  2. The latest PS3 update which can be found here.
  3. A PS3 console which is compatible with this list.
  4. Winrar (optional) – Or any other extraction program.
  1. Ensure your PS3 is updated to the latest Original Firmware 4.87, do that by checking system information. It can be found here and also confirm your console is compatible with this link.
  2. Download the latest ps3 jailbreak firmware. By clicking the button below it will take you to the download page. At the same time, plug in your USB flash drive.
  3. Extract the folder using Winrar. – Or any other extraction program.
  4. Place the PS3 folder from the extracted folder on to the USB drives root directory. This folder contains the PS3 downgrade for 4.87 OFW to 3.55 OFW.
  5. Plug the USB into the PS3 console (off), and then turn it on.
    Once the console has loaded, head to Settings – > System Update -> Update via Storage Media -> Proceed
    This should take around 10 minutes to complete.
  6. Now the console should be 3.55 OFW. You should now be able to install custom firmware on your device. To do this, power off your console and remove the USB stick, and plug it into your computer.
  7. Drag the UPDATE folder into the PS3 folder, and accept overwrites. Now that the USB has 4.87 CFW, you need to plug it back into the console, and Update via Storage Media again.
  8. You should now have 4.87 CFW installed on your PS3. Now that you have this, we recommend you setup FTP to enable you to transfer files back and forth from your computer to your console via the network.
